Rain, rain, go away. Come again some other day!
In that old nursery rhyme, there is the implied promise that if the sun shines, we won’t complain when it rains next. In other words, ‘PLEASE, PLEASE, GIVE US A BREAK!’.
As a native son of the Emerald City, I cannot remember a fall and winter as wet, cold and gray. We have all had quite enough rain, but be grateful that we have such an abundance. It is the very essence of our green world and nourishes the most spectacular gardens on earth.
Through these long, gray days of winter our gardens appear dull and inactive but don’t be fooled! While we have been dodging raindrops, and pulling our parkas snug, the plant kingdom has been hard at work getting ready to start their spring. Hidden from view, leaf and flower buds are swelling with nutrients gathered by new roots deep in the soil and when the time is right, we will have a RIOT of new growth.
So, this a good time to check for any leftover perennial pruning that got missed!
So, when the sun does decide to come out for more than a day or two, hold on to your hats because this spring will be breathtaking!!
